Saving energy means that the money saved can be used elsewhere in the University. Using energy and water probably causes more environmental damage, one way or another, than almost any other human activity.

Being energy and water efficient is good both financially and environmentally for you and the University.

How does the University manage its utilities?

The utility data for the university is monitored and recorded on a monthly basis and measured on a monthly basis and measured against target levels.

The university has a full time Energy Manager and Energy Technician who have responsibility for both reporting and reducing the energy consumption, financial expenditure and carbon emissions across the campus.

The FM department has identified and implemented a number of projects to reduce the energy consumption and has secured funding to assist in the implementation of energy saving projects.

In addition to technical solutions to reduce the universities environmental impact the FM Department also launched an environmental awareness campaign in 2009. In its first year the campaign saw around £119,000 of savings, and moving into its second year is continuing to see strong results.

Energy Consumption 2010/2011

Gas – 76,923,033 kWh
Electricity – 25,415,953 kWh

Loughborough University’s activities place great strain on the environment, and as a socially responsible organisation we are committed to minimising this impact. One of the easiest and most effective ways of doing this is reduce our energy consumption. Facilities Management have staff dedicated to achieving this. Although every person involved with maintaining, designing, refurbishing and using the University’s buildings has an important role to play.

The University’s energy consumption for the 2010-2011 academic year was 102 million kWh at a cost of £3.6 million.

The carbon emissions associated with the Universities energy consumption were 29,550 Tonnes of CO2

That’s the equivalent of £1,147 per member of staff.
