Further Information on the Out Of Hours Service

What to do if you are feeling unwell when your surgery is shut

For URGENT medical care that cannot wait until your GP surgery opens, call your GP practice to get through to our Out of Hours Service. The service is open from 6.30pm and 8.00am Monday to Friday, and all day Saturdays, Sundays and bank holidays.

If you are not registered with a GP practice or can't get through via your practice, you can call 0845 0450411.

How the out of hours service works

A trained call handler takes details such as name, address and date of birth and will then ask for details of the condition the person is calling about. A doctor or nurse will then call back and will discuss the condition to decide how best we can help.   This discussion could result in a range of actions:

·         Advice on self care - most often (in a third of cases) the doctor or nurse will be able to give advice on how the condition can be managed at home

·         Assessment at a primary care centre e.g. Loughborough Walk in Centre

If further assessment is required, an appointment can be made for you to see a doctor at Loughborough Walk-in Centre

The other primary care centres are Hinckley, Oakham, Melton Mowbray, Market Harborough and Lutterworth

·         A home visit - if medically required, a home visit will be arranged.  These are only provided to those who are bed bound or unable to travel to a primary care centre due to their medical condition. If the patient’s condition permits, the best place to be seen is at a primary care centre

Referral to an emergency service - occasionally, callers with true emergencies are referred to the ambulance service or accident and emergency department.
