Off-campus Access
Accessing Priviledged Services Off Campus
If I can access e-mail off campus, what else can I do?
As part of a separate national development called "ATHENS3", all members of the University will have their own Athens username and password which will grant them access to many national facilities such as BIDS, from wherever they are accessing the network. Databases available include those via the I.S.I. Web of Science, NESLI (electronic journals), EDINA, Ei Village and NISS NetFirst.
When we register you, we also provide you with an Athens username and password, which provides access to a variety of nationally provided data sources (Library databases). See also Eduserv Athens User Obligations.
Check your original Athens password. You must log in after clicking on the link to see your original Athens password. If you change your Athens password then this link will not show you the changed password.
Change your Athens password (you will need your current Athens username and password).

Many other databases and electronic journals do, however, rely on the I.P. address for authentication. To access these you need:
VPN Client
IT Services recommend that where possible users use the Cisco AnyConnect VPN client if they wish to access on-campus services remotely.
Staff Desktop XP and Windows 7 Service only
If you are using an IT Services managed computer (Staff Desktop Service or Windows 7 Service), a full Remote Working Client will be pre installed and available from the 'IT Services Menu' on your laptop. If you take a Staff Desktop Service desktop computer (as opposed to a laptop) home, you can install the Client as an optional application. Other Windows users - Staff and Students
For all other users of Windows (XP, Vista, and Windows 7) not managed by IT Services, you can install and use the Windows Remote Client (not Staff Desktop).
Other Operating Systems
IT Services have made the Cisco AnyConnect VPN client available to all Mac OS X (10.6 Snow Leopard and above) and Linux users.
You can also Access the Virtual Private Network from an iPhone, iPod Touch, or iPad.
Remote Working Portal
If you haven't installed the Remote Working Client, you will need to use the Remote Working Portal at https://vpn.lboro.ac.uk. Information on Using the Remote Working Portal.
