Prestigious Award for Chinese PhD Student
Loughborough University is delighted to announce that a Chinese PhD student has been awarded a prestigious prize for research. Chao Wang, of the Department of Civil & Building Engineering, was named a winner of the Chinese Government Award for Outstanding Self-Financed Students Abroad in April 2010.
Chao Wang joined the Department of Civil & Building Engineering at Loughborough University in 2007 and has recently submitted his final thesis. His PhD research investigates the relationship between traffic congestion and road accidents and how this can inform transport policy making. Chao Wang was attracted to Loughborough University because of its research expertise in transport and infrastructure, in particular transport planning and management. When asked to comment Chao stated “I am really pleased to receive this prestigious award, which confirms my research effort and achievement in transport studies, as well as the fact that Loughborough University is an ideal place for early-stage young researchers.” Over the three years of his research he has been supervised by Dr Mohammed Quddus and Professor Stephen Ison who state ”his research has generated serious interest and made an original contribution in the area of road safety”.
This award was set up in 2003 to recognise the achievements of non-government funded students abroad and by 2009 the prize had been awarded to around 1400 Chinese students world-wide. The selection process is fiercely competitive and begins when the education divisions of the Chinese embassies recommend PhD students of the highest academic calibre, who are then shortlisted and considered by a panel of experts in China. In 2010 around 500 students were selected for the award, including 35 in the UK.
