Undergraduate applicants
Intensive Pre-sessional English Language Tuition
Students who fall short of the University's English language requirements may, at the discretion of departments, be admitted onto a pre-sessional English language programme as an alternative way to satisfy the requirements.
The following combinations of IELTS scores and additional pre-sessional English language tuition at Loughborough University are accepted for entry to most undergraduate programmes.
Some departments require language tuition additional to that found below (more details).

The Business School, Department of Economics, and Department of Social Sciences, Communication & Media Studies degree do not offer places conditional on attendance of a pre-sessional English language course.
Students attending the pre-sessional courses will be given an English test at the end of their course. Students who have not met the acceptable standard may be required to take extra English language classes during the rest of the academic year. There will be no charge for such in-sessional classes.

Departments Requiring Higher Levels of English Language
Business School
- All applicants applying to undergraduate programmes in the Business School are required to achieve minimum IELTS of 7.0 (minimum of 6.5 in all parts) or TOEFL 110 or equivalent prior to the start of the course.
- The Business School will not offer places conditional on attendance at a pre-sessional English language course.
Department of Civil & Building Engineering
Air Transport Management Programme
- All applicants applying to BSc Air Transport Management are required to achieve minimum IELTS 7.0 or TOEFL 110 or equivalent prior to the start of the course.
- Applicants with a minimum IELTS score of 6.0 or TOEFL 80 must attend a 10 week pre-sessional English Language course
Department of Economics
- All applicants applying to undergraduate programmes in the Economics department are required to achieve minimum IELTS of 7.0 (with a minimum of 6.0 in each part) or TOEFL 105 or equivalent prior to the start of the course.
- The Economics department will not offer places conditional on attendance at a pre-sessional English language course.
Department of Information Science
- Applicants with a minimum IELTS score of 6.0 or TOEFL 80 must attend a 10 week pre-sessional English Language course.
Department of Mathematical Sciences
- Applicants for entry into: Mathematics & Management (G1NF, G1N2), Mathematics & Financial Accounting & Management (G1NK, G1N4), Mathematics with Economics (G1LC, G1L1) or Financial Mathematics (GN13) should refer to the higher pre-sessional requirements in the table above.
Department of Social Sciences
BSc Communication & Media Studies
- All applicants applying to BSc Communication & Media Studies are required to achieve minimum IELTS of 7.0 or TOEFL 110 or equivalent prior to the start of the course.
- BSc Communication & Media Studies applicants will not be offered places conditional on attendance at a pre-sessional English language course.
