The main subject course in Science provides the opportunity to develop the skills and competences needed to teach Science within the National Curriculum, as well as a particular specialism (Biology, Chemistry, or Physics). You will be encouraged to review and develop your own personal subject knowledge and its application in relation to the National Curriculum, develop your confidence and knowledge of teaching and assessment methods, and improve your understanding and skills of classroom management and organisation. Throughout this process, you will be encouraged to develop a self-critical and reflective approach towards your teaching.

You will have the opportunity to explore the potential of Information and Communications Technology, which has become an important and integral part of Science education in recent years. You will discover how pupils can make appropriate use of technology for remote sensing, data capture and analysis as well as the presentation of results and ideas, and how it provides teachers with a wide range of opportunities for the preparation and presentation of teaching materials and resources.

You will be encouraged and supported to review and revise aspects of National Curriculum content and resources in Science with which you feel least confident and competent, thus developing your overall knowledge and skills profile in preparation for teaching Science in schools.

Applicants with a degree in any Science discipline are eligible to apply. The National Curriculum requires all pupils to study a broad and balanced course in Science so it is preferable for applicants to have studied all three sciences at GCSE, either through a double award or the separate sciences, and two science subjects at GCE A-level. However, if an applicant can demonstrate an equivalent background through either academic study or work experience, they may be considered on their individual merits. Mature students who have relevant commercial or industrial experience are particularly welcome to apply.

For those wishing to teach physics but who do not have a physics degree then a Physics Enhancement Course could be for you. The course is designed for graduates with some physics background (A-level or work-related, for example) who without the physics enhancement course, would not be able to start their initial teacher training as a physics specialist.
