Alternative degree opportunity!
Loughborough University, in partnership with the
Open University, is offering a new flexible route to a degree in physics.
How the programme works
Years 1–2
You will gain a thorough grounding in physics in part-time study through the Open University, while living at home. Course material will be delivered by post and electronically, and you will have support from a tutor and other Open University staff. During your first year you will also have to attend a 3 day practical science residential school. This will provide the opportunity for hands-on experience with equipment in laboratories, helping to build confidence in practical techniques. The Open University courses required are:
The only formal entry requirements are GCSE Mathematics and English Language, grade C. The duration of Open University study is 2.5 years for those starting in January
and 2 or 3 years for those starting in October. Those taking the shorter version will be studying MST121 and MS221 in parallel;
this quiz will help you decide whether you have the required mathematical preparation to do this.
Years 3–4
On successful completion you will be able to transfer into the second year of the
Physics or
Engineering Physics programme at Loughborough, and will expect to graduate with a Loughborough BSc (or MPhys) degree after a further two (or three) years of full-time study. Other BSc and MPhys programmes may be available dependent on prior experience;
please contact the
Programme Tutor for further guidance.
