Applying to the DepartmentAll applications for admission must be made through UCAS. The UCAS system is described in the University's Undergraduate Prospectus. If you are in any doubt about whether to take a year out in industry you should register for the four or five year programme as this makes dealing with your local education authority (LEA) much simpler as it is easier to transfer from a four or five year programme to a three or four year than vice versa. We normally make an offer on receipt of the UCAS form and our standard offer (for 2012 entry and onwards) is:
Acceptable alternatives to Physics are Physical Science and Engineering Science. Mathematics may be replaced by Pure Mathematics, Pure-and-Applied Mathematics, Applied Mathematics, Further Mathematics and Pure Mathematics with Statistics. Mature students and applications offering BTEC, Open University, Scottish Highers, Irish Leaving Certificate or other qualifications will be considered. (A high standard in Mathematics is required). Irish Leaving Certificate applicants should note that higher level Mathematics and Physics is required for all programmes. Those offering the International Baccalaureate are especially welcome to apply. Applicants with the Vocational Certificate of Education (VCE) are expected to have 340 points from a minimum 18 units (any combination of VCE units/A-level units/ AS-level units) including substantial Mathematics and Physics components. The department has no objection to you delaying entry for one year after taking your qualifying examination.
