The mix of full-time researchers and part-time international researchers has led to a thriving and productive research environment, inspired in part by the Landau Institute. The major focus of research in the Physics Department is theoretical and experimental condensed matter physics and nanoscience. The main themes of our research are as follows:
The Department of Physics is part of the research infrastructure of the Research School of Materials, which covers several departments. All of these departments have access to an extensive range of research equipment. Equipment housed in the Department includes a Raman microscope, which is a major research facility for the Faculty of Science, a physical vapour deposition system for thin film growth and equipment for transport measurements on superconducting devices at very low temperatures and high magnetic fields. RAE 200815% of the research in the Department is world leading, and 85% is internationally recognised or better. Overall quality profile: 4* 15% The esteem sub-profile ranks 24% of the research in the Department as of world-leading esteem, placing the Department as equal fourth among Physics departments in the UK for this indicator . 17.1 Category A staff were submitted.
