Yang Liu, who is better known in the department as ‘Troy’, has won the Graduate School Prize, which is awarded to an outstanding student for a mix of both academic and non-academic achievement. The judges were particularly impressed with Troy’s excellent academic achievement. Troy gained a distinction for his MSc in Materials Science and Technology, overcoming language and cultural differences in order to excel in his subject.
The judges were also impressed with Troy’s outreach work in the local community and contributions within the department. Troy really enjoyed his outreach experience too, saying “I worked with a group of students at the Garendon High School, seeing them individually and as a group, helping them to understand what university life and study is like and I also gave them some help with work planning and maths and science revision. It was a good experience and they were really nice people”.
Troy, started in 2008 on the Loughborough China Materials Partnership(LCMP) Scheme, where he completed the final year of his undergraduate studies from a leading Chinese University and then went on to take the Materials Science and Technology MSc, graduating in December 2010. Having gained a distinction in his MSc, Troy has now started a PhD within the Department, researching Multi Layer Coatings for Nickel Based Superalloys.
Talking about his study and the award, Troy says, “I really like it here in the Department of Materials and I couldn’t have done all this without the help and support of my family, the Department staff and the University”.
