E-Society Research Group

This group operates in the scientific domain of social informatics. Underpinning its research are well-developed theoretical frameworks relevant to the complex relationships between people and technology [e.g.. sociotechnical systems theory and system theory (Von Bertalanfy, 1950; Trist & Bamforth, 1951; Katz & Kahn, 1978; Mumford 1983) and information ecologies (e.g. Nardi & o’Day 1999)].

Objectives

  • To advance the understanding of the relationship between digital technologies and society
  • To promote the design and adoption of ICT design strategies which enable stakeholders to participate in, and shape, the digital society.

Background

Digital technologies promise improved productivity, an inclusive society, enhanced lifestyles and competitive advantage. However new technologies continually fail to deliver the promised benefits. Underpinned by sociotechnical systems theory, which emphasises the interdependencies between technology, people (as individuals, groups, communities, society) and the information-based tasks they perform, group members have developed an extensive body of knowledge about the barriers and facilitators to the uptake and effective exploitation of new technologies. Strong links with stakeholders and users in industry, commerce and government ensure that this knowledge is translated into best practise.

Research Themes

  • Strategies for citizen engagement and participation in the design and shaping of digital technologies
  • Capacity building for citizen engagement and participation
  • The effects of digital technologies on the way people live and work
  • ICT-related process change, cultural change and transition strategies
  • Facilitators and barriers to the adoption of the e-Society
  • Digital technologies and social inclusion
  • Human-centred and sociotechnical design
  • Knowledge management
  • Information needs

Digital Technologies and Social Inclusion (DTSI) Consortium

The Group leads and hosts the DTSI consortium which comprises members from the Centre for Research in Social Policy (CRSP) and the Department of Design and Technology at Loughborough University, the Digital Media Access Research Group at the University of Dundee, The Centre for Gerontology at Birmingham University, Mosaic Business Dynamics, and ED Associates.
