Career
2010 -                Reader in Human Geography, Loughborough University

1997 – 2010 Assistant/Associate Professor, Department of Geography, University of Copenhagen

Research interests

My research focus on urban issues in the global South cuts across the fields of social, economic and development geography. In particular I have contributed to debates concerning: housing and home; youth, mobility and entrepreneurship; rural-urban dynamics; governance and planning; and comparative urbanism. Initially my primary research area was Latin America, subsequently it became West Africa, and more recently I have also worked in the Asia-Pacific region and East Africa. I have a particular interest in conducting comparative research and longitudinal studies.

Current research projects

Youth and employment: the role of entrepreneurship in African economies (YEMP), Consultative Research Committee for Development Research (FFU), 6.2 million DKK for a 4 year project 2009-2013. I am the PI on this major research project which is based in the Department of Geography, University of Copenhagen. The aim of the project is to analyse the role of entrepreneurship in generating youth employment in Ghana, Uganda and Zambia. Copenhagen Business School, Makerere University Business School, University of Ghana and University of Zambia are all collaborators in the project. The research team consists of 14 staff members and 6 PhD students. Webpage: http://geo.ku.dk/yemp/

Pereira revisited: the consolidation of low-income housing in Colombia, Carlsbergfondet, 75,000 DKK for one year project 2010 (sole investigator). I revisited low-income settlements in the Colombian city of Pereira where I previously conducted research in 1987 and 1997. Conducting interviews in the same houses has generated data on housing consolidation over a 23 year period highlighting the capacities of, and challenges faced by, low-income inhabitants in their attempts to create decent housing for themselves and their families.

Land management system, urban governance and leadership: the future of urban Tanzania, Consultative Research Committee for Development Research (FFU), 4.96 million DKK for 3 year project 2010-2012. This project is led by the Institute of Development Studies, University of Dar es Salaam in collaboration with the Department of Geography and Geology, University of Copenhagen. The aim is to investigate the dynamics of the urban land management system, urban governance and leadership in urban areas of Tanzania. I am the co-leader of the Danish team. Webpage: http://geo.ku.dk/urbtan/

Urban growth and poverty in mining Africa, ESRC/DFID, approx. £400,000 for 3 year project 2010-2013. This project, led by Deborah Bryceson, University of Glasgow, explores the relationship between mining and urbanization in large and small-scale mining settlements in Angola, Ghana and Tanzania. I am responsible for the Ghana part of the project. Webpage: http://web2.ges.gla.ac.uk/upima/

African rural-city connections, EU-FP7, £2.36 million for 4 year project 2012-2016. This major research project is a collaboration between researchers based in Denmark, the Netherlands, France, UK, Ghana, Tanzania, Rwanda and Cameroon and is led by the University of Copenhagen. The aim is toexplore the connections between rural transformations, mobility, and urbanization processes and analyse how these contribute to an understanding of the scale, nature and location of poverty in sub-Saharan Africa. I lead the work package 'Urban growth dynamics and livelihood opportunities' and the Loughborough University team.
