Established in 1977, the Department of Geography is one of three departments in the School of Social, Political and Geographical Sciences. It is located on a large and attractive campus at Loughborough with easy access to open country, including Charnwood Forest, and to the cities of Leicester (19 km), Nottingham (27 km), Birmingham (60 km) and London (180 km). There are currently over 26 academic staff, 1 information technician, 3 laboratory technicians, 5 secretaries and 1 administrator.
Research activities focus on four main clusters:
Globalization and World Cities (GaWC)
Centre for Research in Identity, Community, Society (CRIC)
(CHES)
Polar and Alpine Research Centre (PARC)
Across these clusters a range of contemporary environmental, social and economic issues are examined. A particular hallmark of our activities is the links established with research groups in other parts of the world, particularly Africa, Latin America, the Middle East and Central and Eastern Europe.
The Department places a priority on the high quality of the teaching programmes. We have an intake of over 150 undergraduate students per year. More than half of these study Geography as a Single Honours degree. Others study Geography and Sports Science, Geography and Sport & Leisure Management, Geography and Management or Geography with Economics. Whichever degree programme is chosen students find themselves in a lively and stimulating atmosphere created by staff who are enthusiastic and leading authorities in their particular areas of interest.
We are proud of our reputation as a friendly Department, a place in which it is good to study and to work. All staff are easily accessible for academic and personal advice. It is no surprise to find that the Department of Geography at Loughborough is one of the fastest-growing in the country.
