Biography

After completing an MA in Economics at Edinburgh University, I then attained an MA in Political Philosophy at the University of York and then a doctorate on Hegel, Marx and the concept of need at the University of Warwick.

My research centres on the concept of the self and identity, Charles Taylor, Marx, Hegel, the Hegelian-Marxist tradition, contemporary social and political philosophy, and the history of social and political thought. My new major project, which further develops from the final chapter of my recent book, Dialectics of the Self: Transcending Charles Taylor, explores the links between aesthetics and politics in radical and critical thought through themes such as alienation, recognition and class. To this end, I have been examining novels such as Michel Houellebecq’s Atomised, Milan Kundera’s Identity, IanMcEwan’s Atonement, and Samuel Beckett’s play Endgame, on which I have presented a number of conference papers and which I aim to utilise as material sources for a new book on these topics. My work on Taylor also continues and I have presented papers exploring his latest work, A Secular Age. I am also currently co-writing with Lawrence Wilde, The Marx Dictionary for Continuum in their philosophy dictionary series.
