Double Honour for School Professors

Yiannis Vardaxoglou, Professor of Wireless Communications and Dean of School, and Michael Kong, Professor of Bioelectrics Engineering, have both been elected IEEE Fellows in the Institute's 2012 Honours List.
An IEEE Fellow is the highest grade of membership and is recognised by the technical community as a prestigious honour and an important career achievement.

Professor Vardaxolgou has been recognised for application of metamaterials and electromagnetic band gap structures to antenna systems; Professor Kong for contributions to atmospheric pressure glow discharge sources in biology and medicine.

Professor Vardaxoglou was delighted: “This is the highest award that IEEE bestows on its members for having achieved excellence in our field of endeavor. An IEEE Fellow is recognition our research is truly international and is brilliant news for Michael and me, as well as for the School and University.”

IEEE Fellow is a distinction reserved for select IEEE members whose extraordinary accomplishments in any of the IEEE fields of interest are deemed fitting of this prestigious grade elevation.

As it stands today, the IEEE Grade of Fellow is conferred by the Board of Directors upon a person with an extraordinary record of accomplishments in any of the IEEE fields of interest. The total number selected in any one year does not exceed one-tenth of one percent of the total voting Institute membership. Each new Fellow receives a beautifully matted and framed certificate with the name of the Fellow and a brief citation describing the accomplishment, a congratulatory letter from the incoming IEEE president and a gold sterling silver Fellow lapel pin with antique finish.
