About the Department of Chemical Engineering

Professor Chris Rielly (Head of Department)

I have great pleasure in welcoming you to the website of the Department of Chemical Engineering at Loughborough University.

Chemical Engineers are fantastically well-placed to tackle some of the global challenges that we will face in the next 50 years, for example in the areas of energy, healthcare, food production and water.

Here at Loughborough, we aim to train these chemical engineers of the future, by giving them skills in science, technology, management and communication that will equip them for professional careers in a broad range of process industries.

The Department has strong links with industry in the UK and overseas. Most of our undergraduate students benefit from these links by adding value to their studies through our structured industrial placement scheme, gaining vital professional experience, and enhancing their employment prospects.

Industry experts also contribute to our undergraduate and postgraduate courses, ensuring that our students are skilled and prepared for the latest issues within the Chemical Engineering field.

Research in the Department is organised into three multidisciplinary areas: Biological Engineering, Pharmaceutical Engineering and Micro / Nano-Materials Engineering.

In each of these we work closely with industry and with researchers in universities worldwide. In recognition of our cutting edge research expertise, we have recently been selected as a lead partner in the EPSRC Doctoral Training Centre for Regenerative Medicine.

We also have an enterprising culture within the Department, notably through our successful industrial collaborations, spin out companies and Knowledge Transfer Partnerships.

If you have any questions or require additional information, please feel free to contact the Department directly - we will be happy to help you.
